‘Living The Unexpected Life’

In our recent discussion, we talked about deepening our faith in Jesus Christ, especially when things don’t go to plan! We discussed three important truths that we hope to apply in our lives:

- “Even in difficulties, God is protecting us from disaster. He is only allowing enough trials... to remind us of our desperate need for Him.” Brother H. Wallace Goddard.

- “The gospel of Jesus Christ is not insurance against pain. It is resource in event of pain.” Dr. Carlfred Broderick

“A True Friend… Forever” (2 Nephi 5:6)

In our BYD this month, we talked about the responsibilities and blessings that come from our friendships. We each committed to do the following this month:

1. Choose our friends carefully, understanding that “they will greatly influence how [we] think and act, and even help determine the person [we] will become” (For the Strength of Youth, pg 12).

2. Be a good friend by “show[ing] interest in others and let[ting] them know [we] care about them” (For the Strength of Youth, pg 12).

3. Each young man, young woman and leader to reach out to one person this month – and invite them to mutual or church meetings.

Tithing Settlement: Opening the Windows of Heaven

Brothers and Sisters,

In our sacrament and Combined Priesthood / Relief Society meetings last week, we spoke of ways to become stronger as individuals and families. One sure way to gain strength as individuals and families is through obedience to the law of tithing. President Joseph F. Smith (1838–1918) taught:

“By this principle [i.e. tithing] it shall be known who is for the kingdom of God and who is against it. … By it it shall be known whether we are faithful or unfaithful” (Teachings of Presidents of the Church: Joseph F. Smith [1998], 276).

This month we have an opportunity to attend tithing settlement with Bishop Shine. Some may wonder, “Why is it so important to attend tithing settlement?”

1. It is an opportunity to declare our tithing status: In July, Bishop Shine will indicate on the records of the Church the tithing status of each member in the ward. It is our privilege to declare to him our own tithing status.

2. It is a time to show our obedience: Tithing settlement allows us to demonstrate our obedience to the Lord. In addition, parents can use tithing settlement as a teaching tool. Family home evening is an opportunity to talk about how the Church uses tithing and to help children prepare their own records for this meeting with the bishop. Children who hear their parents declare that they pay a full tithe gain the knowledge that paying tithing is important.

3. It is a time to audit our personal records and the Church records.

4. It is a time for commitment – and re-commitment: Some may speculate if it’s worthwhile to attend tithing settlement if they have not paid a full-tithe. This interview can be the beginning of repentance and a time to commit to do better.

5. It is a time to CLAIM the promised blessings of paying a full tithe: After commanding His people to pay tithes, the Lord promised to “open you the windows of heaven, and pour you out a blessing, that there shall not be room enough to receive it” (Mal. 3:10). These blessings are not just financial – they can be spiritual, emotional, physical and temporal. Tithing settlement is a way to open the windows of Heaven in behalf of ourselves and our families.

Brothers and Sisters, sign up sheets for tithing settlement are on the ward noticeboard. If you cannot make these times, please see Brother Peter McGregor and we will do our best to accommodate you. We testify that tithing is a true law and that blessings follow as we keep this law.

Reverence and Respect: A Call to Action!

Recently, I spoke of how we are living in the perilous times prophesied by the Apostle Paul (see 2 Tim 3:1). As we each face difficulties, we need help from Heaven – and help is available through personal revelation. Sister Julie B. Beck recently taught: “The ability to qualify for, receive, and act on personal revelation is the single most important skill that can be acquired in this life” (Ensign, May 2010). A key to help us qualify for, receive and act on personal revelation is to understand and live the doctrine of reverence.

Understanding the Doctrine of Reverence
We often equate reverence with being quiet – this is certainly part of it. But as the Primary song teaches, “Rev’rence is more than just quietly sitting: It’s thinking of Father above” (Children’s Songbook, 31). Reverence is more about what’s happening inside of us than what’s happening outside of us. As members of a ward family, we have a responsibility to contribute to an environment where others can get solutions to their problems.

Living the Doctrine of Reverence
During the talk, 5 suggestions were presented that will help us live the doctrine of reverence:

1. LEAD BY EXAMPLE: If we are to have success, leaders and adults must lead out in being reverent.

2. ARRIVE EARLYFOR MEETINGS: The Brethren continually teach the blessings of being early to meetings. Elder Dallin H. Oaks has taught: “We are seated well before the meeting begins. During that quiet interval, prelude music is subdued. This is not a time for conversation or transmission of messages but a period of prayerful meditation as leaders and members prepare spiritually for the sacrament” (Ensign, Nov 2008). We encourage all members to be reverently seated 5 minutes before meetings begin.

3. LEAVE THE WORLD BEHIND: Elder Dallin H. Oaks said: “Sacrament meeting is not a time for reading books or magazines... It is not a time for whispered conversations on cell phones or for texting persons at other locations” (Ensign, Nov 2008). We invite all to switch off mobile phones and ‘switch on’ to the things of the Lord.

4. HAVE RESPECT FOR THE CHAPEL PROPER: President Boyd K. Packer has taught: “Foyers are built into our chapels to allow for the greeting and chatter that are typical of people who love one another. However, when we step into the chapel, we must!—each of us must—watch ourselves lest we be guilty of intruding when someone is struggling to feel delicate spiritual communications” (Ensign, Nov 1991). We encourage members to speak quietly in the chapel. We also invite members to not eat whilst in the chapel.

5. PERSIST WITH OUR CHILDREN: Sacrament meeting is the only Sunday meeting we can attend together as a family. We encourage families to sit together and parents to be mindful of where their children are at all times.

In issuing a CALL TO ACTION, we invite each individual and family to ponder the question, “What can I do to be more reverent?” This could be discussed in a Family Home Evening. We testify, as has President Packer: “While we may not see an immediate, miraculous transformation, as surely as the Lord lives, a quiet one will take place. The spiritual power in the lives of each member and in the Church will increase. The Lord will pour out his Spirit upon us more abundantly. We will be less troubled, less confused” (Ensign, Nov 1991). Thanks for all you do Brothers and Sisters!

The Sanctity of the Body

In our BYD this month, we talked about the blessings that come from having a physical body. We each committed to do the following, as taught by President Boyd K. Packer in his Priesthood Session address in October 1976:
1. “If [we] are struggling… the Lord still loves [us].”
2. Keep our minds focussed on worthy thoughts by choosing and memorising a favourite hymn, “one with words that are uplifting and music that is reverent.” We committed to use this hymn as a place for our thoughts to go when temptations arise.
3. “At times of special temptation skip a meal or two” – or in other words, fast for special help.

Easter – A Time of Renewal, Remembrance and Recommitment

Brothers and Sisters,

Happy Easter! As we celebrate the death, burial and resurrection of Jesus Christ, we recognize that many face challenges, disappointments and difficulties. To all, we hope this Easter season becomes a period of renewal, remembrance and recommitment.

On February 9 2007, Bishop Christopher Williams’ life changed forever. That day, he was involved in a car accident where his pregnant wife and two of his four children were killed. Shortly thereafter, he addressed the members of his ward. He acknowledged that he and his family had been "handed a bitter cup." However, he said, a counselor in his stake presidency had explained that not even the Savior, when he was enduring the agony of Gethsemane, drank all of His bitter cup at once:

"In the Garden of Gethsemane, the Savior drank of [the bitter cup] a little, and then He went back to His disciples, to His friends, for a little bit of support, and then He went in and drank some more. He had an angel come and strengthen Him and support Him, and He drank a little more. He went back to His disciples, and was able to have a little bit of a respite. Then He started to drink the remainder on the cross, until it was all gone, until it was finished. I think it's like our lives; we're not asked to drink more than we're able to all at once… The gospel gives us such strength to draw on the Lord and to allow Him to put His arm around us and help us to drink” (LDS Church News, 17 Feb 2007).

As we face our versions of Gethsemane, we pray that we will remember the Savior – His life, His love and His willingness to help us – each step of the way. As Elder Jeffrey R. Holland taught:

“One of the great consolations of this Easter season is that because Jesus walked such a long, lonely path utterly alone, we do not have to do so. His solitary journey brought great company for our little version of that path—the merciful care of our Father in Heaven, the unfailing companionship of this Beloved Son, the consummate gift of the Holy Ghost, angels in heaven, family members on both sides of the veil, prophets and apostles, teachers, leaders, friends. All of these and more have been given as companions for our mortal journey because of the Atonement of Jesus Christ and the Restoration of His gospel… May we declare ourselves to be more fully disciples of the Lord Jesus Christ, not in word only and not only in the flush of comfortable times but in deed and in courage and in faith, including when the path is lonely and when our cross is difficult to bear” (Ensign, May 2009).

We pray that this Easter week and always, we will stand by Jesus Christ “at all times and in all things, and in all places that [we] may be in.” (Mosiah 18:9). We testify that Jesus Christ lived for us and died for us, because He loves us. Hang in there Brothers and Sisters!

Love the Lord First!

In our BYD this month, we talked about the recent Winter Olympics and the success of Torah Bright, who won gold in her half pipe event. We discussed how Olympic athletes receive lots of training to help them focus and block out any distractions during their Olympic event. We highlighted how this is similar for us – as we face the events of life. We too must learn to “be in the world and not of the world” – to blow out those things that will keep us from doing the things “of most worth” (D&C 15:6). During the month of March, we committed to assess where we are at – to ask ourselves what we need to do differently to “Love the Lord… First” (Matt 22:37-39). We then committed to “do them!” (Mosiah 4:10).

“LAY HOLD ON THE WORD OF GOD”
Helaman 3:29

Brothers and Sisters,

The Stake Presidency have recently extended a challenge to each of us. In a letter dated 3 February 2010, they say:

“We challenge every man, woman, youth and child, every family, to read the Book of Mormon from cover to cover before the end of 2010. Read it together, discuss its words, messages and testimony of Jesus Christ and we encourage you to mark or underline each and every reference to the Saviour as you read. Study the promises and consider the concerns and experiences of the saints of the time. Ponder on how you would feel and what you would do, put yourselves in that time and in that place as you liken the scriptures unto yourself.”
(GCAS Stake Presidency)

This letter will be distributed to each family this month via home teachers. We invite all home teachers to approach Quorum Presidencies for copies of this letter before visits are made. For members of our High Priests Group, please see Brother Hank Kruizinga, Brother David Noda or Brother Peter Elliott. For members of our Elders Quorum, feel free to approach President Wilson Strother, Brother Bill Nathan or Brother Jabin Skipps.

Many of us will remember the challenge extended by President Hinckley in August of 2005 to read the Book of Mormon by the end of that year. At that time, he promised us:

“Without reservation I promise you that if each of you will observe this simple program, regardless of how many times you previously may have read the Book of Mormon, there will come into your lives and into your homes an added measure of the Spirit of the Lord, a strengthened resolution to walk in obedience to His commandments, and a stronger testimony of the living reality of the Son of God.”
(Ensign, August 2005).

What a promise! We hope that each of us will follow the direction of our Stake Presidency and purchase copies of scriptures, if needed, and better still, daily read and ponder their teachings. As we embark on this challenge, we’d invite everyone to start early. After completing President Hinckley’s challenge to read the Book of Mormon in 2005, President Henry B. Eyring testified:

“If we delay the start of our obedience to [this] inspired invitation, the number of pages we [have] to read each day [grows] larger. If we then miss reading for even a few days, the chance of failure [grows]. That’s why I chose to read ahead of my daily plan to be sure I will qualify for the promised blessings of the spirit of resolution and testimony of Jesus Christ. When December ends, I will have learned about starting at the moment a command from God comes and being steady in obedience.”
(Ensign, November 2005).

We testify that as we individually and collectively “lay hold on the word of God,” (Hel 3:29), we will be blessed with a Spirit of peace and happiness, stemming from our steady obedience to those the Lord has called to lead us. Brothers and Sisters, we are grateful for all you do and are thankful for this opportunity to serve alongside you.

Stake Swimming Carnival - Febuary 2010

The Annual Stake Swimming Carnival was held on Saturday 13 February 2010 at the Southport Pools. It was a great day enjoyed by all who attended and participated. It was good to see all of those who were sun smart and being careful during the hottest time of the day.

“Love the Lord... First”

(Matt 22:37-39)

Brothers and Sisters,

We are grateful for your participation in our Combined Priesthood / Relief Society Meeting last week. In that meeting, we discussed one of the four ‘Areas of Focus’ of the Area Presidency for 2010: Sharing the Gospel. As part of our discussion, we presented our Ward Mission Plan for 2010. This plan continues with our theme to “Love the Lord... First,” from Matthew 22:37-39.

During the meeting, we discussed three ways we can share the gospel more effectively:

Opening Our Mouths: Brother Singsam taught of the need to exercise faith, to trust in the Lord’s promise that as we “open [our] mouth[s], [they] shall be filled” (Moses 6:32).
Opening Our Homes: Brother Bogaert taught of ways that we can create gospel sharing homes. One specific way is through a ‘Come On Over Evening’ (COOE). For those who would like to hold a COOE, feel free to approach a member of the Ward Mission Team.
Opening Our Hearts: Bishop Shine concluded with a discussion about the need for each one of us to open our hearts to the promptings of the Spirit. As we open our hearts and yield our wills to God, we can become “instruments in the hands of God to bring... [our] brethren [and sisters]....to the knowledge of the truth” (Alma 17:9).

For those who were unable to get a copy of this plan, copies will be available at the door as you enter today. Given that today is Fast Sunday, we invite all members of our ward family to fast for:
1. Our full time missionaries, Elder Tokaduadua and Elder Fox; AND
2. For individual missionary experiences.

Brothers and Sisters, we testify that as we each open our hearts to the promptings of the Spirit, everything else will follow – we will open our mouths and our homes and missionary experiences will follow. Twenty five convert baptisms for 2010 is just the tip of the iceberg! As Elder David A. Bednar has taught:

“We properly pray for the safety and success of the full-time missionaries throughout the world. And a common element in many of our prayers is a request that the missionaries will be led to individuals and families who are prepared to receive the message of the Restoration. But ultimately it is my responsibility and your responsibility to find people for the missionaries to teach. Missionaries are full-time teachers; you and I are full-time finders. And you and I as lifelong missionaries should not be praying for the full-time missionaries to do our work!” (Ensign, May 2008).

Brothers and Sisters, thank you for all you do. Let’s get about the work of the Lord. We testify that as we do, blessings will follow for us individually, as families and as a ward family.

The Courage to Stand Strong!

For our first BYD of the year, we discussed this years mutual theme: "Be strong and of a good courage; be not afraid, neither be thou dismayed: for the Lord thy God is with thee whithersoever thou goest" (Joshua 1:9). We talked about Joshua’s life and how he needed courage to lead his people to the promised land. We discussed how we also need courage to make a difference in the lives of others. At the end of the night, we committed to stand up in the following areas:

Be Strong: we will be strong by reading our scriptures daily and attending seminary (if we are old enough).

Of Good Courage: we will demonstrate courage by taking a stand, even when it is unpopular.

Be Not Afraid, Neither Be Thou Dismayed: we will not be afraid or dismayed, as we know that Heavenly Father will give us power, love and sound minds (refer 2 Tim 1:7).

For the Lord thy God is with thee whithersoever thou goest: we know that as we stand in Holy Places that the Lord and His Spirit will be our constant companions.

Isle of Capri Ward Chapel Clean Up

On Saturday 16 Jan 2010, we had a Ward Chapel Clean Up Day at the Isle Of Capri Chapel. We had a great turn out and there were many helping hands there to make our chapel look spic and span.

Thank you to everyone who came along to help clean and tidy up –it was a great morning! Let’s remember to clean up after each activity!

Youth Temple Trip, January 2010

On Saturday 9 January 2010, some of our IOC youth, young single adults, parents and leaders attended the Brisbane Australia Temple to perform temple baptisms for those who have passed away. Five people attended the temple for the first time and we were blessed to perform 161 baptisms on the day! Thanks to everyone who attended.... we look forward to going back soon!

A New Year – A New Beginning!

Brothers and Sisters,

Happy New Year!

Before we embark on this New Year, we thought it might be wise to reflect on the year that has been, where witnessed:
• Baby births and blessings;
• New arrivals to our ward family through boundary changes and 17 convert baptisms;
• Marriages;
• New presidencies called in the Relief Society, Young Men, Primary, Sunday School and the High Priest Group;
• Members serving full-time missions;
• Members receiving their endowments and being sealed in the temple;
• Members who were reactivated;
• Men who received the Priesthood; and
• We also farewelled a number of families who moved elsewhere and said goodbye to Brother Marcus Slimmens, Sister Ina Toa and Brother Jim Randell, who passed away, “till we meet again” (Hymns, #152).

So, as we stand on the cusp of a New Year, we have wondered, as we’re sure you have, “What will 2010 hold for me? What blessings are in store? What trials await?” As we face this New Year, our prayer is that we will see it as a New Beginning – an opportunity to reassess those things that matter most and then put plans in place to achieve them.

President Thomas S. Monson has taught:

“I plead with you not to let those most important things pass you by as you plan for that illusive and non-existent future when you will have time to do all that you want to do. Instead, find joy in the journey—now.” (Ensign, November 2008).

Bearing this counsel in mind, we remind everyone of the eternal significance of the Saving Seven – doing these things will help us as we begin this new year and throughout our lives:
1. We pray morning and night;
2. We study the scriptures daily;
3. We hold Family Home Evening weekly;
4. We attend the Temple;
5. We pay our tithes and offerings;
6. We obey the commands of ancient and modern prophets;
7. We have fun!

Brothers and Sisters, thanks for all you do to lift, inspire and nurture one another. We testify that this work is eternal and we look forward to serving alongside you in the new year.

BISHOP’S CHALLENGE TO YOUTH

Over the last three months in our Bishop’s Youth Discussions, we have been discussing the power of INFLUENCE – as it relates to friends, to the Holy Ghost and this month, as it relates to this year’s mutual theme: 'Be thou an example of the believers, in word, in conversation, in charity, in spirit, in faith, in purity' (1 Timothy 4:12). As we come to the end of the year, we committed to BE DIFFERENT in each of the areas identified in the Mutual Theme:

Word: we will be examples in word by mastering our language – by speaking positively and avoiding swearing.

Conversation: we will be examples in conversation by monitoring our conduct and behaviour.
Charity: we will be examples in charity by reaching out to one another in genuine love and concern.

Spirit: we will be examples in Spirit by being optimistic and friendly.

Faith: we will be examples of faith by believing and doing as the Saviour would have us do.

Purity: we will be examples of purity by living clean and virtuous lives.

“Think how you would respond to the following questions: Could you tell me the names of the three members of the First Presidency and the names of each of those who comprise the Quorum of the Twelve? These are the 15 men you and I sustain as prophets, seers, and revelators.

“If we were to hold up a picture of these Brethren, would you recognize each of them?.... Could you share with me the counsel given by the First Presidency and the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles from last October’s general conference?

“Perhaps more important, could you share with me a recent decision where you changed something in your life because of counsel received from one of these 15 men?” (CES Fireside for Young Adults, 4 March, 2007.)

2. Lay Hold on the Scriptures: we talked of the blessings that come from setting aside regular time for scripture study. In particular, we were encouraged to go to the scriptures with questions. President Henry B. Eyring has taught:

“Going to the scriptures to learn what to do makes all the difference. The Lord can teach us. When we come to a crisis in our life… we should go looking in the scriptures for specific help. We will find answers in the scriptures. The Lord seemed to anticipate all of our problems and all of our needs, and He put help in the scriptures for us—if only we seek it.” (Ensign, July 2005.)

For those who didn’t receive them last week, handouts from this meeting are available on the front table in the foyer.

In this Christmas season, we pray that each of us, as individuals, families and as a ward family, will “continually hold fast to the rod of iron” (1 Nephi 8:30). We testify that as we do this, we will witness great blessings and miracles.

Coming “Forth Out of Obscurity, and out of Darkness”
Doctrine and Covenants 1:30

Brothers and Sisters,

As you will hopefully recall, earlier this year, our Ward Mission Plan was presented. Our hope this year was to come “forth out of obscurity, and out of darkness” by doing the following four things:
• Inviting all to “come unto Christ” (Moroni 10:32);
• Implementing our Ward Mission Plan by working effectively with the full-time missionaries, the ward council and ward members;
• Teaching the doctrine of missionary work; and
• Testifying of the blessings of missionary work.

In doing these things, we hoped to see 16 people enter the waters of baptism during the year. Last weekend, Yolanda Liao was baptised as a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and was the 16th person baptised in the Isle of Capri ward this year.

Brothers and Sisters, we are grateful for all of your efforts this year to help this work go forward. We are thankful for the many people who have assisted in opening their homes and hearts to investigators and new members. We are also grateful to Heavenly Father for blessing us with these precious new converts to strengthen and fellowship with.

Even though our goal has been reached, the work is by no means done! We hope that we can continue to live each day as “full-time finders”, as Elder David A. Bednar teaches (Ensign, May 08). Sometimes we think that we haven’t got time to be member missionaries or we don’t know how or we may lack desire. Elder Quentin L. Cook has taught:

"Missionary work is not just one of the 88 keys on a piano that is occasionally played… It is a major chord in a compelling melody that needs to be played continuously throughout our lives... What we desperately need is for member missionary work to become a way of life; for the Savior's mandate to share the gospel to become a part of who we are." (BYU Devotional, 13 March 2007).

We pray that each of us will have the courage, faith and determination to open our mouths and know that they will be filled (see Moses 6:32). We know that as we do this, great blessings will come to each of us, individually and collectively. We are grateful for all you do and for the blessing it is to serve alongside each of you.

In our October Bishop’s Youth Discussion, we expanded on our earlier discussion on influence and talked about how the Holy Ghost can be our ultimate influence as we live worthily and learn to recognise His promptings. We were challenged to do the following during November:

1. Find out - and remember who we are!

2. Get rid of the noise in our lives!

3. Listen for the still, small voice!

Stake Song Festival

On Saturday 17 October, the Isle of Capri ward participated in the Stake Song Festival. Our entry began with a duet from Brother Peter Elliott and Brother Randy Peterson. This was followed by our ward choir presenting 'Because I Have Been Given Much' and 'Oh Happy Day!' A great time was had by everyone (except for Bishop Shine who was dragged up on stage, unaware, to perform with the choir!!) Thanks to all who helped in the organisation of our ward entry and to all who supported our ward on the night!

First to Follow the Prophet!

Brothers and Sisters,

Next Saturday 11 and Sunday 12 October, we will have the opportunity to attend and participate in General Conference. General conference is one of the main ways we are able to receive guidance and counsel from our Church leaders.

Times and details for these broadcasts are contained in this Newsletter. Please note (and inform all under your stewardship) that no Sunday meetings will be held at the Isle of Capri Chapel next Sunday.

In preparing for General Conference, I’m reminded of some remarks given by one of my mission presidents, R. John Walker. He shared the account of Moses leading the children of Israel out of Egypt (see Exodus 13-14).

As we may recall, the children of Israel were commanded to leave Egypt. But by the time they had reached the Red Sea, Pharaoh had changed his mind and he pursued them with a host of chariots. With the impassable Red Sea in front and the thundering army coming from behind, the Israelites were paralyzed by fear. Eventually, they remembered their faith and…

“The Lord … made the sea dry land… And the children of Israel went into the midst of the sea upon the dry ground: and the waters were a wall unto them on their right hand, and on their left” (Exodus 14:21-22).

As the Egyptians pursued them, “the waters returned, and covered the chariots, and the horsemen, and [of] all the host of Pharaoh … there remained not … one of them… Thus the Lord saved Israel…” (Exodus 14:28, 30).

In recounting this miraculous event, President Walker observed: “I hope that I would have been the first to follow Moses – the first to jump into the water and trust him as the Lord’s ordained servant” (personal notes, Greenwich Stake Conference, 19 August 2001).

As we prepare to attend and participate in General Conference, we pray that we will each have that same determination – to be the first to follow the counsel of our prophets, seers and revelators. As Elder Neil L. Anderson has taught:

“We are not forced to obey; there is no compulsion. But if we will be attentive to their words, if we will be responsive and willing to change our behavior as the Holy Ghost confirms their counsel, we will not be moved out of our place.” (CES Fireside for Young Adults, 4 March 2007).

Brothers and Sisters, we love you. We are grateful for all you do and all you are. We pray that each of us will have our faith refreshed as we attend these meetings. We testify that as we do this, we will be happy and enjoy peace of mind and Spirit.

Welfare Month: Prepare for the Unforeseen

Brothers and Sisters,

Under the direction of our Stake Presidency, September 2009 has been designated ‘Welfare Month: Prepare for the Unforeseen.’ During this month, each ward has been asked to focus meetings and activities on practical ways to prepare for the unforeseen.

Sometime during this month, we will each be invited to participate in a Mock Emergency Day. Phone calls will be made on a Friday night to notify everyone of an ‘unexpected emergency’ and a safe gathering place. At the meeting place, we will be able to fellowship together and attend classes that will help us to prepare for the unforeseen.

Further details on this month’s activities will be shared today in a special combined Priesthood / Relief Society meeting.

We testify that the most important preparation for each of us as we face the uncertainties of life is to be spiritually prepared. President Henry B. Eyring has taught:

“What we will need in our day of testing is a spiritual preparation. It is to have developed faith in Jesus Christ so powerful that we can pass the test of life upon which everything for us in eternity depends…

“The great test of life is to see whether we will hearken to and obey God’s commands in the midst of the storms of life. It is not to endure storms, but to choose the right while they rage. And the tragedy of life is to fail in that test and so fail to qualify to return in glory to our heavenly home…

“However much faith to obey God we now have, we will need to strengthen it continually and keep it refreshed constantly. We can do that by deciding now to be more quick to obey and more determined to endure. Learning to start early and to be steady are the keys to spiritual preparation. Procrastination and inconsistency are its mortal enemies.” (Ensign, November 2005).

Brothers and Sisters, we pray that each of us can prepare early – and be steady in that preparation – both temporally and spiritually. We are grateful for all you do and are thankful for this opportunity to be in your service.

Youth Etiquette Night

On Tuesday 11 August, our youth combined with Helensvale ward youth for an Etiquette Night at the Watermark Hotel. Our youth were taught the finer points of etiquette by Bishop Skipps (the ‘a’ and ‘b’; how to eat soup; and how to eat a bread roll!) A great night was had by all, as shown by the pictures.

Primary Activity August 2009

The activity was based on D&C 88:119 concentrating just on 4 things:

1. House of Faith (planting tomato seeds in a cup)

2. House of Order (making a game of folding laundry)

3. House of Prayer (making a prayer rock)

4. House of Learning (making a bookmark) which each child got to take home the things they made.

A big thank you to all those involved in organising and those that helped throughout the evening.

Missionary Update August 2009

1. Elder Orlando Wihongi-Seia left for the Provo MTC on Monday 10th August.

2. On Wednesday 19th August, Sister Brenda Zhoya will be leaving on her full-time mission, heading over to the New Zealand MTC.

3. We have received a further two missionaries in the ward - Chinese speaking missionaries. Elder Hu (who was in our ward last year) as well as a new arrival. Please make these new elders feel welcome (along with Elder Hogg and Elder Bergquist!)

4. A reminder that on Friday 14th August, we have the baptisms of Daniel Pipernee and Mangi Terekia at the IOC Chapel at 7:30pm. All are welcome to attend.

Brothers and Sisters, the Lord is blessing us as a ward family with many missionary experiences and opportunities... let's keep going! Thanks for all you do!

Hanging In and Holding On

Brothers and Sisters,
We are grateful for your participation in our Annual Ward Conference last week. In our sacrament meeting, I was asked by the stake presidency to do two things – to look back on the progress the ward has made toward goals and to look forward to the coming year – we felt it might be useful to review this counsel.

Look Back
We remind everyone of our ward scripture for 2009, an invitation from Mormon to “lay hold upon the word of God” (Helaman 3:29). There are two goals associated with this scripture:
1. Immerse ourselves in the scriptures every day.
2. Bring our scriptures to every meeting.
We testify that as we “lay aside the things of this world” (D&C 25:10) and “lay hold upon the word of God” (Hel 3:29) that we will be blessed as individuals, families and as a ward family.

Look Forward
As we look forward to the year ahead, our plea is to hang in and hold on – to not give up, especially to Satan, who seeks to destroy our happiness. Our plea is to go forward with an eye of faith – to trust in the Lord. We are told in 2 Peter 3:9 that “the Lord is not slack concerning his promise.” We testify that this is true for ALL of us! In making this plea, we remind everyone of Elder Jeffrey R. Holland’s experience over 45 years ago. He tells of being newly married, studying and struggling to make ends meet. One day he and Sister Holland were walking together on the sidewalk:
“Somewhere on that path we stopped and wondered what we had gotten ourselves into. Life that day seemed so overwhelming, and the undergraduate plus graduate years that we still anticipated before us seemed monumental, nearly insurmountable.... On a spot that I could probably still mark for you today, I turned to Pat and said something like this: “Honey, should we give up? I can get a good job and carve out a good living for us. I can do some things. I’ll be okay without a degree. Should we stop trying to tackle what right now seems so difficult to face?”.... Then my beloved little bride did what she has done for 45 years since then. She grabbed me by the lapels and said, “We are not going back. We are not going home. The future holds everything for us” (BYU Devotional, 13 January 2009).

Brothers and Sisters, let’s not go back. Let’s not give up. Eternal life with our families and as a ward family is a prize worth fighting for. We can’t let life or the challenges of life get in the way of that prize. As Elder Jeffrey R. Holland has taught:
“God doesn’t care nearly as much about where you have been as He does about where you are and, with His help, where you are willing to go” (BYU Devotional, 13 January 2009).

We pray that each of us can “lay hold upon the word of God” and thereby hang in and hold on. We are grateful for all you do and are thankful for this opportunity to be in your service.

“GET CONNECTED!”

Brothers and Sisters,
You may have noticed our Primary children excitedly wearing ‘Future Missionary’ badges over the last couple of weeks. Our Primary Presidency have given each Primary class a ‘Get Connected’ pack with suggestions and items to help class members reach out and rescue those who have not been attending regularly.

When we heard about this and saw the reactions of our Primary children, we felt to invite each of us to connect with one another – no matter our age, activity levels or life experience.

One brother, who struggled with church activity made this observation:

“The gospel has never left my heart, even though it has left my life. I ask for your prayers. Please don’t forget those of us who are out here—the lost Latter-day Saints. I know where the Church is, but sometimes I think I need someone else to show me the way, encourage me, take away my fear, and bear testimony to me” (Ensign, Nov 2001).

This will require us to “focus outwardly,” as Elder D. Todd Christofferson recently counselled (Ensign, May 2008) – to look beyond our own challenges and to lift and bless others.

President Thomas S. Monson has taught:

“The world is in need of your help. There are feet to steady, hands to grasp, minds to encourage, hearts to inspire, and souls to save. The blessings of eternity await you. Yours is the privilege to be not spectators but participants on the stage of… service.” (Ensign, Nov 2001).

Brothers and Sisters, while the world desperately needs our help, our ward also needs our help. While we may not be able to provide immediate solutions to these problems, we can reach out in sincere concern; we can listen with love; and we can patiently encourage. As we prepare for Ward Conference weekend (Sat 25 & Sun 26 July), we invite members to:

Contact and connect with each individual / family we home and visit teach during the month of July; and
Invite them to participate in our ward conference activity and Sunday meetings.

We testify that as we faithfully connect with each person, great blessings will follow – for us and for those we invite. President Monson has taught:

“Our task is not insurmountable. We are on the Lord’s errand, and therefore we are entitled to the Lord’s help. But we must try.” (Ensign, Nov 2001).

We testify that as we exert effort, we will be blessed to be “instruments in the hands of God to bring about this great work” (Alma 26:3). Thank you for all you do!

Bishop’s Youth Discussion – June 2009

In our first Bishop’s Youth Discussion (in January this year), we each filled out a ‘Commitment Card’ with goals we hoped to achieve this year. Now that we are half way through the year, we reviewed a talk from President Thomas S. Monson titled “Finishers Wanted.”

We hoped that this would give us the motivation to “finish our course” (2 Tim 4:7)!

We were invited to follow President Monson’s 6 ‘marks’ to achieve our goals and become FINISHERS:

1. The Mark of Vision.

2. The Mark of Effort.

3. The Mark of Faith.

4. The Mark of Virtue.

5. The Mark of Courage.

6. The Mark of Prayer.

Changing of the Guard

Recently, there was a change in the ward Young Men Presidency. Brother Liam Guy was realeased as our Young Men President and sustained as the new Stake Young Men President. Brother Tawanda Kujenga was sustained as our Young Men President, with Brother David Strudwick as 1st Counsellor and Brother Richard Webber as 2nd Counsellor in the Young Men Presidency.

We thank Brother Guy and his counsellors for their service in the Young Men Presidency.

Take Hold – Reach Out
Brothers and Sisters,
We are grateful for your participation in the combined Priesthood / Relief Society meeting last Sunday. In that meeting, we discussed two important principles: Taking Hold of the Scriptures and Reaching Out to Rescue others.

Brother Singsam taught us of the blessing of daily reading the scriptures. President Henry B. Eyring counselled:

We will find answers in the scriptures. The Lord seemed to anticipate all of our problems and all of our needs, and He put help in the scriptures for us—if only we seek it … The only way you can be sure that a busy schedule doesn’t crowd out scripture study is to establish a regular time to study the scriptures. I have found that the beginning of the day and the end of the day are mine. Those are times I can usually control.” (Ensign, July 2005).

We remind all members of our ward goal this year to “lay hold on the word of God” (Helaman 3:29). In particular, all members are invited to feast on the scriptures daily and to bring their scriptures to every meeting.

Bishop Shine then taught of the need to reach out to rescue others, after we have taken hold of the iron rod (see 1 Nephi 8). We heard of the experience recently shared by Elder Jeffrey R. Holland, where he told of President Gordon B. Hinckley, who at the age of 96 notified the brethren of the Quorum of the Twelve that he had cancer. One week later, he announced that he would undergo chemotherapy. At this point, Elder Holland pleaded, “Oh President, do you think that’s wise? Why not relax and be comfortable – you’ve done enough.”

We were told of how President Hinckley rose up in his chair, riveted his eyes on Elder Holland and said, “I owe it to the people of the church who pray for me everyday.” Of this, Elder Holland observed:

“President Hinckley fought to serve... While there is breath left and there might be one soul to save, we continue to save souls. President Hinckley’s salvation was secure. He had done all He needed to do. And yet he kept working. Why? Not for his throne or for his salvation – but for yours! It wouldn’t be Heaven for President Hinckley or President Monson if you are not there.” (27 May 2009, Karawatha Stake Centre.)

Each member was then invited to reach out to one person – someone who might be sick or someone in need of encouragement. If you haven’t yet had a chance to do this, we’d invite you to do that this week.

Brothers and Sisters, we are grateful for all you do – for your testimonies, for your enthusiasm for this work and for your support. This month, we will be focusing as a ward family on developing self reliance. We look forward to ‘digging deeper’ into this with you. We pray for each of you and hope you each feel Father in Heaven’s love and influence daily.
